Preparing Your Home For Sale

Here are some things to help prepare your home before putting it on the market:

  • Curb appeal is very important.  Most potential buyers will drive by a home they are interested first before they take a step inside.  Make sure your home’s appearance makes them want to come inside.  Mow the lawn.  Prune the bushes.  Weed the garden and plant flowers.
  • Clean the outside. Pressure wash the exterior of your home.  Pay attention to the front entrance area.  Are there cobwebs?  Clutter?preparing-house-for-sale
  • Make minor repairs.  Do all doors and cabinets function correctly.  Are there any plumbing leaks?  Are there any broken windows?
  • Make your front door inviting.  A fresh coat of paint, especially in a color that contrasts with the home, will make the front door stand out. Replace faded house numbers so buyers can see them from the curb.
  • Purchase a new welcome mat.
  • Remove clutter and depersonalize the home.  You may need to rent a storage space to clear out some extra items and/or furniture.  Buyers try to envision their belongings in the home/space.
  • Organize closets and drawers.  Messy closets make it appear the home does not have enough storage.
  • Every surface to be clean.  Make your home sparkle.
  • Paint rooms to a neutral color.
  • Eliminate bad odors.  When showing the home, fill it with inviting smells by putting out fresh flowers and baking a batch of cookies.  Stay away from scents.  Buyers may be sensitive to those scents.
  • Light up your home.  Make sure all the lights work and there are fresh bulbs.  If you need more light in a room, add a lamp.
